Q. - Do I need to have prior boating experience to join?

A. - No.  Although many members do have boating backgrounds, it is not a requirement for membership.  You'll receive valuable boating safety training as a new member, and advanced Coast Guard Seamanship training if you wish to pursue the Auxiliary Boat Crew qualification.

If you prefer to get involved with land-based roles, there are plenty of them to choose from as well!

Q. - I don't have a whole lot of spare time to volunteer, could I still join?

A. - Yes!  While members are encouraged to be active and participate regularly, it is understood that many of us have work, family, and personal commitments as well.  One great thing about the Auxiliary is that the amount of time you wish to volunteer is totally up to you.  Whether you can volunteer one afternoon per month, several days per week, or any amount in-between, the Coast Guard values and appreciates your service.

Q. - What are the eligibility requirements for membership?

A. - You must be at least 17 years old, a U.S. Citizen (either by birth or by naturalization), and be able to pass a background check.

Q. - Are there any physical requirements for membership?

A. - There are no physical requirements for general membership.  It is only required that you be physically capable of performing the tasks of the particular qualifications you choose to pursue.

Q. - Will I have the opportunity to work alongside the Active Duty?

A. - In certain instances, yes!  Our Auxiliary Boat Crews often take part in training exercises alongside the Active Duty.  Some members also assist with various tasks at several local Coast Guard stations.

You could also support a Coast Guard unit by becoming qualified as a Watchstander, or as a Food Service specialist preparing meals for the Active Duty at local stations, aboard cutters, or at VIP events.

There are occasionally other opportunities to directly augment the Active Duty, depending on the particular needs of the sector.
